Traveling with the Jabberwock

like that white van on I-95
yesterday,  he came
out of nowhere, speeding
toward who knows what
could be that important as to
cause him to be so cavalier?

as he galumphed past, he paused in my space,
pulling me to him, causing me to hit the brakes,
heart pounding. then as quickly as he appeared,
he moved on, weaving in and out,
drawing others in to founder in his wake,
leaving a field of brake lights behind him.

after years of traveling the highway,
you’d think I'd have learned to drive defensively,
but I get so taken in by the lure of the new places
and the wind in my hair, I forget to remember.
beware the jabberwock and the dreaded vorpal blade.
shun the frumious bandersnatch.

  2. By all means, beware. You're sure this isn't in California? These kind of drivers inspire words that are not poetic.

  4. Wow, a vorpal blade would make for an interesting way to deal with road rage! Very nicely done :)

  5. Definitely a speeding vehicle like that is something out of the ordinary, a jabberwock, that bends your perceptions like a talke out of the looking glass.

  6. Damn bandersnatches are everywhere! A scary event to be sure, but it inspired such an interesting capture. Nicely penned!

  7. Oh Patti - this was delightful. I love the metaphor of the open road where those madcap boys can "capture" your heart for short spaces and then jumping to the Alice poem! Really enjoyed this!
