Autumn Appetites (Repost)

autumn’s tapestry
draped over summer’s last green
spicy smells float by

hay rides and cider
tiny goblins on doorsteps
piles of pumpkins high

leaves drift like sugar
in air crisp as an apple
my thoughts turn to pie

This is a repost of a piece I wrote a couple of years ago. But it is so perfect for the prompt, I couldn't resist sharing it again.

Haiku: Alcatraz

harsh whispers echo
ghosts float by just out of sight
evil lives here still

Alcatraz Prison, also known as "The Rock," housed the the worst of the bad guys, including Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelly, and the Birdman of Alcatraz, Robert Stroud.  During its 29 years of operation, the penitentiary claimed no prisoner had successfully escaped. A total of 36 prisoners made 14 escape attempts, two men trying twice; 23 were caught, six were shot and killed during their escape, and three were never found, believed drowned in the currents of San Francisco Bay.

The prison closed in March 1963.

The Curious Case of the Brown Shoes

Happy Thanksgiving, Everyone*!

So glad you could make it for dinner.

* Including those of you not celebrating Thanksgiving tomorrow.
But don't worry, I made enough for you too.

16 for dinner, one cook
You've got to admit, it's a pretty good excuse!

Friday Flash 55: Life Cycle of a Tiger Longwing

Darting, dancing,
Flitting, prancing
From petal to petal, to and fro.

Dipping, skipping,
Tasting, sipping,
My sunlit stripes all aglow.

Whirling, twirling,
Spinning, swirling,
Ggossamer wings putting on quite a show.

Drifting, lifting,
Patterns shifting,
Visiting flowers all in a row.

Flying, shying,
Too soon dying,
A month of life, and away I must go.

This is my offering for Friday Flash 55, hosted by G-Man (a man of strange appetites!) at Mr. KnowItAll.

160: I'm Still Standing

I’ve lived long
Loved Summer’s bake
Laughed at Winter’s chill.
.
Time flakes years
Off my rusty face
Yet cannot touch my will.

And so
My iron heart
Time can never still.

Theme Thursday: The Call

Fronds rustling softly
As they answer tropic breezes,
Palm trees wave and beckon:
Come on down! Come on down!

100-Word Challenge: Daybreak Daliance

Dawn breaks over the distance.
Morning spreads into the sky.
It’s still too dark to see much outside.
I open my beak, call out to the world,
Announcing my presence with pride.

Abundant with attitude,
Splendid with style,
My plumage so lush,
My head gear so bright:
Call me “Cock of the Walk.”
You’d be right..

Thanks to me, the world awakens.
The chicks in the henhouse begin to cluck.
“We’re hungry,” they grumble, “and have eggs to lay.”
I’m Cock of the Walk, so I wink and I crow,
“Hey, Girls, let's start with a roll in the hay!”

This is my entry for this week's prompt of "Abundant" in Velvet Verbosity's 100-Word Challenge, generously hosted here by LouCeel.  Lou, with so much on your plate, I know this is tough. I'm grateful to you for keeping it going.

Seeing in the Dark

A moment of youthful blindness
Stole my ability to see.
A foolish choice
Took everything away,
Leaving me nothing to look at
But the walls and bars surrounding me.
I close my eyes and picture it,
All I once had when free,
And brush in hand,
I paint it back,
To adorn my new reality.
