Friday Flash 55: Hephæstus’ Revenge

This is my entry in this week’s Friday Flash 55, hosted by G-Man. The idea is to write any story you like in 55 words (no more, no fewer) then tell G-Man by leaving a comment on his Flash 55 post.  Go visit for some more great 55 entries.

Hephæstus’ Revenge

That trollop!  Mine by Olympian decree, and Aphrodite dares betray me with that bloodthirsty warmonger Ares?  She knows not with whom she trifles. I will have my revenge!

Hence, Hephæstus set forth to forge a trap they wouldn’t escape.   As his wrath grew, so did his fire, and all the land knew well his fury.

  4. MM & Stan: Thanks. I cannot, of course, claim any credit for the photos, but they definitely inspired the post.

Changnoi: The story is from Greek mythology. If you haven't discovered mythology yet, you are in for a treat. There are some terrific stories there. And so many words and phrases that have made their way into our everyday language came from mythology. I love that.

  10. Sheri, G-Man, Anthony, Brian, Katherine, & Kathy: Thanks. I love mythology, especially how their gods are vested with all the human emotions. That led to some great clashes and cat fights.

  12. Loved it! Having just seen the (very disappointing) latest rendition of Clash of the Titans, I had a wonderful time reading about Perseus, Adromeda, Io, Europa, and more. I loved reading Greek mythology when in Grade Six.

  14. See? I KNEW there was a woman behind that thing - although the cleric in Iran who blamed it on all the Iranian women being to promiscuous has it all wrong. Aphrodite, after all, would encourage them - it's her fault.

  20. The gods are capable of human excess, too! Which is why they are so lovable. Great one!

  21. I love it, blame it on the gods!!

  22. That's a humdinger of a 55, if ever I read one.
I wrote this on the same subject really:-

    Timely Warning

The Earth protests; a signal from her core
erupts into the sky for all to see,
as roiling lava deep below her crust
seeks escape from ancient, layered rock.

Her body can't gainsay the primal force
that mantel plumes the centre of her being
and shatters peaceful days in nearby lands,
which quake and shudder in anticipation.

Her voice will rumble, ominous and loud,
then hiss and spit, vituperous with steam,
forcing Man to heed her warning cries.
But will his recognition come too late?

And will extinction be our only fate?

  27. John: Yup. Apparently you just don’t mess with the god of volcanoes.

Peter: Sorry to hear Clash of the Titans is disappointing. I was hopeful.

Shakira, Mama Zen, Jessie, Thom: Thank you!

Lou: That Iranian cleric had best watch out for all the goddesses out there who don’t take kindly to false accusations.

    Kristine: Me either!

    Lime: You got that right.

Alice A: Too late, I think. Hmm… wonder who the god of tornadoes is.

Sandy: I love that human frailty in the gods too.

Buzzard: Well, it’s better than blaming it on human women, like that Iranian cleric!

Jinksy: Nice piece. We should indeed take warning. Did you see my piece for the 100-Word Challenge, “Swollen,” on March 30? It was a similar look at the effects of ticking off Mother Nature.

PG: Mythology has the best stories. I just can’t help tapping them now and then.

Me, kkrige, Leslie: Thank you for visiting and for your kind comments.
