Lost in the Mists of Yesterday

I see her there every afternoon
As I walk home from the bus stop.
She sits in her rocking chair
Behind the glass of the big bay window,
Gazing out at something only she can see.

Cast in bronze by the late afternoon sun,
She doesn’t move or return my wave.
But a gentle smile graces her lips,
As she wanders though the mists of yesterday,
Visiting moments more joyful than this one.

    oh i love the photo,
    and the compassion you reveal
    bronze,
    mists
    graces
    joy

the second stanza expands the first.

  3. "Cast in bronze by the late afternoon sun." I love that image. Makes me wonder about her story and why she's that way. Beautiful photo to mirror the woman's state.

  8. My mother-in-law has Alzheimer's. I often see that look on her face, and I know she is "traveling" somewhere 50 years ago.

  15. i don't blame her, sometimes what we have to focus on in the world today is just so not good.

sending thoughts of comfort to your family for your mother in law.

  16. touching with a hint of sadness to the reader...but I'm sure she happy rocking in her rocking chair, the one that takes her everywhere.

  17. Ohh.. a very moving poem indeed! Sometimes, a light stare into the eyes of the elderly can evoke such sadness and lightness, both at the same time! I totally remembered my grandmom when I read this... I used to come back from school, and watch her sit by the window, looking at God knows what!! And then ofcourse, once I was home with her, she was 100% WITH me :)
Maybe some day, when I am old, I too will gaze out, and think of those lovely days!

I loved this poem, Patti! Brought tears to my eyes..
