The Funeral

Mourners gather around the raw wound.
Some clutch flowers to toss into the void.
Skies darken in sadness as heads bow.
I stay away, filled with anger and dread.

Kettle drums roll as skies rend and cleave.
Collective tears of eternity flood through.
Inevitable sadness drenches me where I lie,
Huddled in bed, blanket pulled over my head.

What a cold lesson it is to learn that,
When the heavens weep in sodden sobs
To the sound of so many hearts breaking,
There can be no shelter from the storm.

  1. wow.emotive patti...great imagery the eternal tears...the rending and cleaving of the sky...makes me think of the deathof my MIL...

  2. "When the heavens weep in sodden sobs to the sound of so many hearts breaking".....such powerful writing, Patti. So sorry for what your family is going through.

  3. Great write and expression.
    My warmest regards and condolences.

  4. No shelter from the storm...you're so right. I gather from the above comments that this is personal and timely. I add my condolences and am so sorry for your loss.

  5. Anger can only take you so far. You already know that you can't hide from the pain of it too. I hate the line "I'm so sorry for your loss". Heard it too many times before when I was too young to hear it myself. I just hope that you & the people that mean the most to you can come together to help each other heal when you need it the most.

    Blessings to you Patti.

  6. Oh Patti. I take it you didn't go. Hard times to cope with no matter what the weather. Hearts out to you and your friend.

  7. Very poignant. The sadness and regret is palpable.

  8. One thing I really like about your writing, Patti, is how you are not afraid to tackle difficult subjects. I like that you can face and express emotions surrounding dark things. I like that when something sucks you say it sucks. This is very powerful and very real. I think it is one of the best things you've written. Thank you.

Thoughts? I would love to hear from you.
